Ekom-Nkam Waterfalls
fromThey are such a jewel in the heart of Cameroon! This is a gorgeous waterfall on part with any in the world; they just confirmed the beauty of this country. It is particularly beautiful in the rainy season,.. in reality, they are twin falls, one male and one female, and then there are other twin falls less than 100 m from the main ones. These waterfalls were featured in the Tarzan movie. The fauna and flora around the area is very rich. They are simply outstanding. Totally worth your time and money!
The 1984 film Greystoke – The Legend of Tarzan starring Christopher Lambert was filmed in Cameroon and you can visit Ekom Falls which was featured in the film. This is a spectacular waterfall not only because of its size and volume of water but because of its stunning surroundings. It is surrounded by dramatic slopes of lush green rainforest. There is a good vantage point where you can take photographs and then you can walk down a very steep slippery slope to get lower down and a little closer, which adds to the magnificence.
You have to register at a visitor center just before the falls. There is a small fee to visit and for a required local guide. You may also be followed by other guides and local children. They won’t bother you on your visit, but they will somehow expect to be compensated for sharing your visit. It’s up to you whether you give them anything, but when you do, it encourages them to continue the practice which is off-putting to many tourists.
Wear good hiking shoes and casual clothes–the paths are VERY slippery. But that’s what makes the wild flowers bloom year round, so consider it a mixed blessing.
If the guide takes you to the top of the falls, be careful. They sometimes choose a path on the boulders right next to the river where they are comfortable but where you may be unfamiliar. There are NO barriers up there. One slip and you could go over the falls–we opted for a slightly safer path and the guide just shrugged and smiled. Again, your choice but accidents like this happen everyday in Cameroon, so use some caution.

Ekom Nkam Falls are the most beautiful waterfalls in Cameroon. 80 meters high, they are characterized by 2 falls: a “male” fed continuously whatever the season, and a “female” fed only in the rainy season. The name Ekom Nkam comes from 2 words: Ekom which is the name of the village where the falls are located, and Nkam which is the name of the river from which the falls originate. This is where scenes from the film “Greystoke the Legend of Tarzan” were shot in 1982 with Christophe Lambert. Ekom Nkam Falls are a must visit for all nature lovers. It is possible to access the falls by a 9km track. The bravest can take a short hike, the others can still access the falls because the track is passable by car.
