Bimbia Cameroon Historic Gateway

Bimbia Historic Gateway is a coastal heritage site near Limbe in Cameroon’s Southwest Region that played a major role in the transatlantic slave trade between the 17th and 19th centuries. It served as a departure point where enslaved Africans were held and shipped across the Atlantic. Today, the site contains ruins such as slave barracoons, iron restraints, cannons, and the symbolic “Door of No Return,” which bear witness to the suffering endured there. Recognized as a National Cultural Heritage Site and listed on Cameroon’s UNESCO Tentative List, Bimbia stands as an important memorial and educational site, while also facing ongoing challenges related to preservation, development, and community involvement.
